ZERO TOLERANCE

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Again I have to complain about behaviour I have witnesssed at the Netball Centre.

Again parents of child at the courts making unneccessary comments towards umpires and players.

What I don't understand is this - If you can't umpire and have not taken your time to take a course and get out there and have a go then how do you have the right to comment on a job that someone else is doing? Even worse if you have SHAME ON YOU!

TAKE THE CHALLENGE AND PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS:

GO to our Umpiring page for more Information.

To all our Umpires thanks for the great job you are doing it is appreciated.

Cheers

Kirsten

OREWA NEW WORLD

RODNEY DISTRICT

SECONDARY SCHOOL CHALLENGE

Monday seems to be synonymous with Rain Day as it has rained for 6 of the 8 rounds played and finals night was no exception with horizontal rain under the floodlights at Rodney netball centre.  Luckily the sheep pens provide good shelter for spectators!

This competition has stepped up a notch from the regular Saturday games at local centres by moving to 60 minute games with injury time and bench protocols in an effort to introduce these top college players to the more formal aspects of the game.

Last night culminated in the finals of the 7 week round robin between the Rodney Colleges.  At 6pm the games for the minor placing's started, with Kingsway playing Whangaparaoa, Kaipara playing Rodney and Mahurangi Development Squad playing a Rodney netball invitation team.  It is hoped that Orewa College will fill the 8th place in 2010.

Mahurangi Development finished 7th in this inaugural competition.

Kaipara played well to hold out a young Rodney team, still developing their skills, with a win of 35 -24 and take 5th place.

An injury/illness hit Whangaparaoa College team trailed Kingsway College from the first quarter and never managed claw their way on top.  Whangaparaoa was unable to hold onto 3rd place and lost to Kingsway in a close 31 - 26 game.  Kingsway Goal Keep Kelly Burrows defended the goal with her life and came away with some superb steals to keep the young Kingsway team on top and take 3rd place in the competition in a well fought match.

But the limelight was stolen by the grand final game between Otamatea, in their fashionable lime green uniforms and private school Wentworth College.  This game started 30 minutes later so the final two quarters were able to be watched by the other teams.  Otamatea took the early lead, with a height advantage at each end of the court over the technically competent and tricky Wentworth team.  Wentworth played catch up most of the time, sometimes levelling the score, only to lose another 2 or 3 goals and get behind again.  Some superb shooting from both teams and combined with fantastic intercepts in the mid-court kept the spectators guessing in a nail-biting finish.  Although losing several centimetres in height to the Otamatea Goal Shoot, the Wentworth Goal Defence Jenny Harris made some excellent well timed jumps to gain rebound possession from her taller opposition.  However, it was not enough to secure a win.  The final score was Otamatea College 37 Wentworth College 35 in a game befitting of the competition.

Otamatea College have become the first winners of the Rodney District Secondary Schools Netball Challenge, taking home the trophy kindly donated by Orewa New World and a netball key/phone charm for each player donated by Charms NZ.

At the prizegiving, talent scouts from Netball North who have regularly attended the games, named their tournament team.  Congratulations to the following top Rodney netball players:

Alana Moulds - Otamatea

Elise Hilliam - Mahurangi

Torrie Chapman - Kaipara

Racheal Chapman - Rodney

Melissa McKay - Otamatea

Julia Neil - Rodney

Sonya Van Kampen - Whangaparaoa

Alexis Sadgrove - Whangaparaoa

Jenny Harris - Wentworth

Katie Hay - Wentworth

Kelly Burrows - Kingsway

Laura Anderson - Kingsway

DRAW FORMAT 2009 - SENIOR

There are 39 teams, which makes 5 grades of 8 teams (less one team in Senior 1 grade).

8 teams in Premier

7 teams in Senior 1

8 teams in Senior 2 and Collegiate 1 combined

8 teams in Collegiate 2

8 teams in Collegiate 3

For the first 7 weeks, each team will play a round robin against every other team in their grades.

There will be some large score discrepancies especially when the top team (1) plays the bottom team (8). At the end of the round robin teams will be ranked 1 - 8 based on points (countback on goals if required for teams on the same points).

There will then be 2 weeks of promotion/relegation round, then finally the top 4 and bottom 4 teams in each grade will be identified. Each grade will split into an A and B section.

Then, there will be 6 weeks of round robins with the 4 teams in each section playing each other twice. In these sections, the games should be much closer, with some hard fought netball. At the end of the round robins, teams will be ranked 1 - 4 (countback if required).

Finals - the final day will play 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4 in each section. The winner of the section will be the winner of the 1 vs 2 game on the final day!

If you have any questions about the draw and format, please ask!

I'm also looking for a replacement draw steward for the 2010 season, so if you're interested to find out about it, make yourself known to an Exec member.

Judy.

Draws for all grades can be located under the Draws page under Junior and Senior categories.
